Jacob Clemens non Papa – Frais et Gaillard

 

Frais et Gaillard, first appeared in print in Pierre Attaingnant’s Dixiesme livre contenant XXVIII chansons nouvelles a quatre parties 1541. It was one of the most widely used pieces found in division manuals with at least nine versions surviving today.

The accompaniment takes the form of an organ playing the bottom four vocal parts, leaving the top part (‘Superius’) to be ornamented.
