John Playford’s ‘The Division Violin’ contains two sets of variations on the song tune ‘John Come Kiss Me Now’ – one by virtuoso violinist Thomas Baltzar and this one, by Davis Mell, which is less violinistic and suitable for performance by recorder.

Divisions on ‘The Duke of Norfolk’ or ‘Paul’s Steeple’

 

This was a popular tune in the 17th century. It appears twice in John Playford’s ‘The Division Violin’ and in a transposed version in the ‘Division Flute’. This album contains both D minor (violin) and G minor (recorder) versions.
